Public Safety: The Foundation of a Thriving Edmonds

In the past few weeks, Edmonds has experienced a series of unsettling incidents—a violent assault at a local massage parlor (now classified as attempted murder), a man wielding a machete near the downtown fountain, and news from Bremerton of an individual impersonating an Edmonds police officer with a fake badge.

These events are reminders that, while Edmonds is known for its small-town charm and sense of safety, we cannot take public safety for granted. Our police officers are doing a tremendous amount with stretched resources, and we owe them not only our gratitude but our continued support.

A Professional, Accredited Force

Edmonds is fortunate to have one of the top accredited police departments in Washington State. Despite staffing reductions and officers out due to injury or personal leave, our police continue to respond to every 911 call. That level of commitment is extraordinary—and it sets Edmonds apart from many larger cities where calls often go unanswered or investigations stop short.

I recently spoke with our new Police Chief, Loi Dawkins, about why Edmonds is so special. Her passion for this city and the dedication of her team were clear. Our officers not only show up professionally, but they also invest personally in ensuring Edmonds remains a place where families feel safe, businesses can thrive, and neighbors can gather without fear.

Safety and Economic Vitality Go Hand-in-Hand

I also had the opportunity to talk with Commanders Josh McClure and Ryan Machado about how thoughtful economic development can help address the challenges we see along Highway 99. Strong, vibrant neighborhoods reduce crime, theft, and blight by creating community pride, gathering spaces, and economic opportunities. Strategic planning—done with safety in mind—can improve not only our quality of life but also the long-term security of every part of Edmonds.

Why Public Safety Matters

Public safety is not just a “city service.” It is the foundation for everything else we want Edmonds to be:

  • Families can let their children walk to the park, grab ice cream downtown, or bike to school knowing their community is looking out for them.

  • Businesses can open their doors with confidence, knowing theft and vandalism are kept at bay.

  • Community gatherings—from festivals to parades—can happen without fear of negative elements undermining the celebration.

Without this foundation, our quality of life begins to erode. That’s why supporting our police and first responders isn’t optional—it’s essential.

Looking Ahead

As your City Council candidate, I am committed to ensuring our police have the resources, staffing, and community backing they need to keep Edmonds safe. I want to preserve the strong sense of safety we enjoy downtown and extend it across every neighborhood—including along Highway 99.

When we support public safety, we’re not just investing in law enforcement—we’re investing in the very fabric of our community. That’s what keeps Edmonds the kind of place where people want to live, raise families, start businesses, and retire with peace of mind.

Public safety is the foundation of a thriving Edmonds. Let’s make sure it remains strong.
